Design Tips from an NYC Luxury Home Stager
As a stager in New York City, we've had the opportunity to work on a wide range of properties, from studios to multi-million dollar homes. While each project is unique, there are a few key design tips that I always keep in mind, no matter the space. If you're looking to update your home or simply want to make the most of your space, here are some tried-and-true tips from a New York City stager:
1. One of my favorite ways to add a sophisticated and completed look to a room is using wallpaper. There are a few types of wallpaper style that I personally love to work with, including grasscloth, textured, embossed, and linen. Simple, clean and textured walls can give the feeling of sophistication and warmth. More calming than a patterned wallpaper, textured walls offer more dimension than just painted walls and bring a hint of coziness to any room.
2. Decorative light fixtures and statement lamps can add another dimension to each room, bringing an interior design project to life. Lighting adds depth and height to a room, creating drama, cozy spots, and bringing attention to special areas throughout the home. A unique light fixture can draw the eye and maximize the impact of a space. Wall sconces are a versatile fixture that create visual stimulation and simultaneously add light to dark areas. Do you have an empty corner in a space you’re not quite sure how to use? Place a unique and dramatic floor lamp with a mid-century modern armchair and cocktail table for a cozy vignette moment. Layering light throughout your home by combining lamps, pendants, floor lights, downlights, and uplights can add vast interest and depth to each room.
3. The size of the rugs in your home can speak volumes for the look and feel of a space. An oversize rug, for example, can bring a luxurious feel to a room, as well as more visual space. A rug that doesn’t comfortably hold the furniture in a space can make a room look small and disproportionate. On the other hand, a large rug that has a perimeter around all the furniture in an area can make the room inviting, open, and large. Rugs can also distinguish areas within an open floorplan to separate and define spaces.
4. Natural light can make a small space feel larger and more welcoming. It’s a well known concept to bring your window treatments higher to maximize your windows and highlight natural light. As we all know, the higher the window treatments are placed, the taller the ceilings and the rest of the room appears. Light and airy curtains can also really brighten and open up a room. Choosing light colors and airy fabrics can maximize natural light and create a calm atmosphere.
By following these simple tips, you can transform your home into a stylish, functional, and welcoming space that you'll love to come home to.
